Santa Cruz Sunday #17
For this Santa Cruz Sunday, I offer you some of my favorite photos from the weekend along with some quotes from About Time and others that go right in line with the wonderful message from that movie.
"We're all traveling through time together, every day of our lives. All we can do is do our best to relish this remarkable ride."
-About Time
- "And so he told me his secret formula for happiness. Part one of the two-part plan was that I should just get on with ordinary life, living it day by day, like anyone else.
- But then came part two of Dad's plan. He told me to live every day again almost exactly the same. The first time with all the tensions and worries that stop us noticing how sweet the world can be, but the second time noticing. Okay, Dad. Let's give it a go."
- -About Time
“Give your
entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about
what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard
things come up when the time comes." Matthew 6:34 The Message
Gratitude
is like a flashlight. It lights up what is already there. You don’t necessarily
have anything more or different, but suddenly you can actually see what it is.
And because you can see, you no longer take it for granted. – M.J. Ryan
Research on
emotion shows that positive emotions wear off quickly. Our emotional systems
like newness. They like novelty. They like change. We adapt to positive life
circumstances so that before too long, the new car, the new spouse, the new
house--- they don’t feel so new and exciting anymore. But gratitude makes us appreciate the value
of something, and when we appreciate the value of something, we extract more
benefits from it; we’re less likely to take it for granted. In effect, I think gratitude allows us to
participate more in life. We notice the positives more, and that magnifies the
pleasures you get from life. Instead of adapting to goodness, we celebrate
goodness. We spend so much time watching things- movies, computer screens,
sports- but with gratitude we become greater participants in our lives as
opposed to spectators. -Robert Emmons
It is a serious thing
just to be alive on this fresh morning in this broken world. -Mary Oliver
If the only
prayer you ever said in your whole life was “Thank you,” that would be enough. -Meister

Normal
day, let me be aware of the treasure you are. Let me learn from you, love you,
savor you, bless you before you depart. Let me not pass you by in quest of some
rare and perfect tomorrow. -Mary Jean Irion
God of the
everyday
Thank you that you
Make no divide
Between ordinary
And extraordinary
May we be blessed
To see you in the mundane
And ordinary tasks
Which you have gifted us this day
